Chapter 11

Jetta

I wanted to say that I was content. To be clear, I was happy with Savair. There was no question that I could see myself with him. For days and nights, we lived at the Sola. Whoever did the cooking was a damn genius, that’s all I had to say. The food was delicious. I had new clothes—soft pants similar to the male’s loose-fitting ones, only much smaller. Whoever crafted the clothing had made me more shirts in the style of my white tank top. The fabric was soft and fit well. Definitely not the work of primitive people, but then, nothing about the Destrans was primitive, despite their lack of technology.

Nights with Savair were explosive. I sincerely hoped no one lived on the other side of our wall, or that the walls were thick enough so no one heard the sounds of our cries of ecstasy. They were loud and frequent, as we enjoyed every moment we had together.

I spent considerable time each day working with Darta and Ertan, who were patiently teaching me the Destran language. I was doing well with it, even though the act of being a student once again was strange and humbling. For a while now, I’d been on the other side of the podium, giving the lesson. Now I was the one taking notes and struggling through quizzes—Darta’s version of them, anyway. She was not an easy instructor to please. It was curious to them why I could speak with Savair, but no one else. It was curious to me, too.

Maybe the Sola didn’t like me. I wasn’t Destran, after all. To her, and everyone else here, I was the alien, the outsider. It wouldn’t surprise me if some of them—like Savair’s advisor, Madjori—thought I was a Brakken spy. If the situation was reversed, humans would definitely think that. Nevertheless, I was accepted and shown kindness by many, and that was all I could ask for from these people.

Savair’s quarters—our quarters—were located on the side. There was a large window that opened to the outside, and if I was feeling daring, I could run my finger over a white strip beside the window and a whole section of the wall would fold out, creating a balcony. It was just one of the ways the Sola morphed and changed to suit her inhabitants, whom she seemed to want to please.

I stood out on the balcony one afternoon, after language lessons, to let the cool air in. The red sun was beginning to dip low over the treetops. It was a lovely view, so high up I could see the forest and the purple sea. Savair and I had gone to the water’s edge several times to walk and talk, when he was sure there were no Brakken hiding on the bluffs. The water itself wasn’t safe to swim in, sadly. It was too acidic for skin to be comfortable.

I still liked to gaze at it. Occasionally I’d see the spine of a great sea creature crest the surface before diving back below.
